Ulyanovsk State University is the youngest university in the city. Its history dates back to 1988 when the Council of Ministers of the USSR decreed to create the Ulyanovsk branch of Moscow State University. This very year the university opened its doors for 200 students of Mechanics and Mathematics and Economics Departments.
UlSU approach is to combine classical university traditions with the latest trends in the Russian and worldwide educational systems, educational process with innovation activities in scientific technologies. It trains qualified specialists who are able to define prospects of main branches of economy and of regional social assets, which builds up moral, educational, and cultural values of the society.
Through years of cooperation UlSU formed traditions and educational approach of MSU, which largely determined the nature of its development, its high educational standards and scientific potential. All this allowed the new classical university on Volga to take the leading place in educational and scientific work of the region.
To meet the requirements of modern society today UlSU is planning to create a system that will unite education, sciences and economy. By now its management has signed General Agreement with Sergey Morozov, Governor of Ulyanovsk region, has concluded a strategic partnership contract with City Duma and district authorities. UlSU is a partner of the largest city enterprises, such as UAZ, Aviastar-SP JSC, Volga-Dnepr Group, Atomic Reactor Research Institute (of Dimitrovgrad), Research and Production Center MARS and others. Expanded system of additional education, including further training programs, refresher courses, MBA program, and others, makes its graduates more competitive on labor market.
Trends of social and economic development of Ulyanovsk region, of the Volga region and of the whole country, state needs in development of significant technologies and promising sciences, needs of society, enterprises and different businesses in education of high quality, opportunity to use effectively the existing scientific-educational and innovation potential of UlSU, as well as worldwide trends of development of economics, technologies and social communications – all of these features determine priority areas of UlSU activity.
Areas of high priority in the framework of social and economic development of Ulyanovsk region include:
- nuclear industry, including development of Nuclear Innovation Cluster;
- aviation construction and air transportation system including development of Nuclear Innovation Cluster as part of Ulyanovsk harbour free economic zone;
- instrument engineering with the whole complex of promising worldwide nanotechnologies and nanomaterials;
- regional protection system of environment and health which undermines supporting new facilities of high technology, mainly it is Federal High Technology Center of Nuclear Medicine (Dimitrovgrad).
